The NAOS Strategy awarded the prize to the project “Sodium-reduced bread as a source of potassium”

Europastry collected the VII NAOS Strategy prize for the best business initiative of 2013, awarded by the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Security and Nutrition (AECOSAN), an independent body of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. The award recognises the positive impact on public health of the project “Sodium-reduced bread as a source of potassium”.

Europastry’s objective was to create reduced-salt bread for a series of products already existing on the market (substituting 0.5% salt with flour (out of a total of 1.8%). With the average consumption per capita as a reference, this change involves a reduction in salt consumption of 0.5 grams per day per person for those consuming this bread.

Europastry introduced types of bread to the market in 2013, all of which have a lower salt content and act as a source of potassium. In 2014, it is expected that the company will make reduced-salt bread only.

The benefits of a modest reduction in salt in highly consumed products are well known and have been highlighted by many studies.
